Audemars Piguet Royal Oak

The Audemars Piguet Royal Oak in rose gold adds a touch of elegance and refinement to a historically masculine collection, continuing the watch’s legacy as a time-transcendent classic. Beautifully crafted from 18-karat rose gold, you’ll have to handle this piece with a bit more care than its steel counterparts.

In the early seventies Swiss watch companies found themselves on the brink of financial ruin as they faced dramatic sales drops due to the production of quartz watches in Japan. Ahead of the curve, AP’s managing director at the time, Georges Golay, called world-renowned watch designer Gerald Genta and presented him with the daunting task of creating an unprecedented steel watch unlike anything available on the market at that time—by morning. Genta welcomed the challenge, designing what has become one of the world’s most iconic watches in only a matter of hours.

A diver’s brass helmet served as the primary inspiration for the Royal Oak design, as can be seen through the octagonal bezel, secured with eight hexagonal screws. Drawing on the watch’s nautical origins, Audemars Piguet chose to name its latest creation the “Royal Oak” after a fleet of eight vessels of Britain’s Royal Navy, which themselves were named after the hollowed oak tree in which King Charles II hid to escape the supporters of the Parliament during the English Civil War after the Battle of Worcester in 1651.
